Relocation: A Way to Keep Renovations Under Control

When talking with a homeowner about their renovation the other day, it was said to me: "I wish I had been given the advice you just gave me to relocate while my renovation was taking place, if not only for convenience, but for my sanity."

Although it may not be an option for all homeowners, if you are undertaking a major renovation, relocating during the actual renovation may be the ideal situation to help keep your renovation on schedule and your family as safe as possible. If this is an option however, make sure you let your insurance agent know, as special adjustments may be required.

It is important to consider things such as the significant amount of dust that forms during the construction process. Even if you are not relocating for the renovation, take time to pack away as much stuff as you can before the renovation begins so you aren't cleaning up dust for months afterwards. Remember that dust travels, so even if you aren't renovating adjacent rooms, at least cover up or pack away as much as possible. This includes taking pictures down off of the wall. You don't want any damage to occur when the vibrations of power tools start.

Another important consideration is your pet. It is best not to have your pet on site during construction, for their safety and that of the renovators. A previous conversation I've had with a renovator about this situation included a time when he had to rescue a nail from a dog's paw and then spent time scouring the yard everyday to make sure slivers of wood and nails weren't lying around to create further damage. As good of a job as the renovators do to clean up at the end of each day, there will be some debris missed. In saying this, it is also a good idea, if you do have a dog, to take the time before the renovation crew begins the project to clear up any feces in the yard or it may mistakenly be tracked through your home, a mess that is no fun to clean up.

With these couple of ideas to consider before you begin your renovation, you can save yourself a great deal of time and frustration and enjoy your new renovation.
